Three Major Battles
The battle of gettysburgThe battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1st to July 3rd. Over these 3 days excessive fatal fights occurred with casualties of 46,000 to 51,000 suffered by the two armies. On the first day of the battle, the Confederate met with the Union at Gettysburg. The second day saw even bloodier battle as the Union was attacked from the left and right too. The last day was gruesome as Commander Pickett led Pickett's Charge on the Union line. This is one of the most known tactic from the Civil War. A huge number of Confederate soldiers hit the Union line head-on, in the beginning it worked but eventually failed. This battle is the bloodiest of the civil war. This was a major turning point in the war, for if the South had succeeded then the Confederacy most likely would have won the war. This battle gave a whole new hope and showed the strength of both armies.

The gettysburg addressThe Gettysburg Address was given by President Abraham Lincoln on November 19,1863. It was given as a dedication of the Soldier's National Cemetery. ( a cemetery made for the Union soldiers killed at the Battle Of Gettysburg) It was a speech of only 2 minutes, of 272 words, yet created a whirlwind feel throughout the whole country. Lincoln delivered it at Gettysburg, which gave it even more meaning as Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest and most decisive battles. It was so important since it not only addressed the need of equality by the civil war but a message for human equality forever and for all.

The battle of shilohThe battle of Shiloh took place on April 6-7, 1862. It took place in Hardin County, Tennessee. 40,000 Confederate soldiers ambushed a line of Union soldiers covering some ground near the Tennessee River. Since it was such a huge number of Confederate compared to the Union, it drove the Union out of their camps. However, the Union Federal army held on to their ground, and by the second day of fighting the Union was reinforced. The weakened Confederate army was completely driven out, with more than 23,000 casualties. This was important to the war for it was the most bloodiest at the time and gave Union victory of the Tennessee territory.

The battle of antietamThe battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862. It is infamous for being the Civil War’s bloodiest day (this is the bloodiest day not the bloodiest battle.) The Union Potomac Army attacked General Lee’s Army at Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Union gave fierce battles but the Confederate gave equal counterattacks. Even though the Union had a great advantage in their numbers, the Confederate still held up against them. However, in the end, passing over Antietam Creek the Union was able for victory. This victory was what Abe Lincoln wanted, giving him what he needed to announce the Emancipation Proclamation, which is the document that changed he course of the whole Civil War.
